Memorial Day Musings: My Brother Came Home From War Today

Memorial Day Musings: My Brother Came Home From War Today

I was blessed to have a brother who went to war and came back whole. This poem is dedicated to all the fallen and those the fallen have left behind.

My brother.

My brother.

My Brother Came Home From War Today

My brother came home from war today,

He was gone for eight months and three days.

He said the job was a long way from over,

But he had to come back, anyway.

He said he wanted to stay ‘till the finish,

To the see this fight through to the end.

Freedom is something worth sharing,

And worth any cost to defend.

My brother came home from war today,

With his medals pinned to his chest.

He couldn’t win all by his lonesome,

But I promise you he did his best.

He’d never talk much about combat,

Said some things are better unsaid.

No regrets and no hesitation.

Just duty, courage and lead.

Yeah, my brother came home from war today,

He and four other men.

Five warriors returning from battle,

Five warriors that won’t fight again.

Some say the five lives were wasted,

Some say that war’s never right.

Then let those people live in their bondage,

For me, freedom’s worth any fight.

My brother came home from war today,

In a box made of metal and wood.

He died as a soldier and hero

And lived the way all men should.

Living to serve God and country,

And to leave a good mark on this Earth.

Fighting to give others freedom,

And dying to prove what its worth.

Yes, my brother came home from war today,

With courage still marked on his face.

And freedom needs warriors to keep it,

So tomorrow, I’ll take his place.
