Part V - The Church
We are persuaded that we are the church.
Elected according to God’s purpose,
entrusted to keep God’s great promise,
empowered to endure the fires that try us.
We were not created by or according to some whim of man,
but were brought into being for the purpose of a divine plan.
The church is founded by and upon Christ, the cornerstone.
No other foundation would be strong enough,
no other founder would suffer long enough,
to make and keep a holy people for the glory of God alone.
We did not and we cannot make ourselves the church of God’s witness,
but were miraculously made this
and so marvelously remain this
by the unstoppable and unsearchable will of Providence.
We are persuaded that as the church we are called to live as a community
united in a common faith
sharing a common baptism
gathered around a common table
affirming a common covenant
citizens of a common Kingdom
working towards the common good
of our common neighbors
through the proclamation and embodiment of the uncommon Gospel
of our uncommon King.
We are the church, not of man but of Jesus Christ.
The church belongs to none but Christ,
for he is our groom, and we his bride.
We owe fealty to no man
to no king
to no country
to no created thing
but only to the God who has called, consecrated, commissioned, kept, and commanded us.
We are persuaded that we are the church, and that the gates of hell will not prevail against us
against our God
or against our work in this world,
so long as remember
who we are
whose we are
and why we are here.
We are the persuaded that we are the church.
