Part VIII - The Gospel for the World

Part VIII - The Gospel for the World

We are persuaded
that the Gospel which we possess
and which possesses us
is not meant for ourselves.

We are not the end of the Gospel we hold
it is not meant to simply fill or save the one who holds it,
but is to overflow
to spill over
to flow out of
to spring forth from the life of the church
into the life of her neighbors
for the life of the world.

We are persuaded that to this end we must actively cultivate
and consistently practice habits of evangelism.
That since the Gospel must be shared,
and since we are the ones to share it,
that our lives should be marked by
our words filled with
and our actions indicative of
the great Gospel that justifies and sanctifies us.

We are persuaded that the Gospel must go forth
and that we must be the ones to take it.
That the light must not shine only at our feet
or around our homes
but that we also must carry it as a torch to wherever the darkness reigns.
That the world was made for the Gospel
and the Gospel for the world
and that wherever there is pain
the Gospel must go.
Wherever there is sorrow
the Gospel must go.
Wherever there is brokenness,
the Gospel must go.
Wherever there is sin, and lostness, enmity with God,
that is where the Gospel must go
and we are the ones who must take it there.
For the Gospel is light
and joy
and wholeness
and righteousness
and purpose and restoration and life.

We are persuaded that since the Gospel is life
both to our souls and to the world
and since we are the vessels chosen by God to carry it
that we must learn it.
We must know it.
The Gospel must be the watchword on our tongues
the ever-present thought in our minds
the impetus behind our actions.
It is breath to our lungs
life to our bones
joy to our hearts.
So we are persuaded that it is the duty of every Christian
and the responsibility of every church
to love knowledge and wisdom and understanding.

So that we might better know our God
so we might better see the world
and so we might more deeply rejoice in the truth of the Gospel.
Of this, we are persuaded.
